Stop switching models mid-chat
Free.
Claude saves your chat so it doesn't have to re-read everything on every message. That's called the cache. A couple of things quietly wipe it, and when that happens your next message pays for the whole conversation again. Here's how to avoid it.
Pick your model at the start and stick with it
Every model has its own cache. If you switch models mid-chat with /model, Claude re-reads the whole chat with no discount. Pick your model when you start. If you need a different one, start a new chat.
Coming back after a break? Resume from a summary
The cache lasts about an hour on a Claude subscription (5 minutes on the API). Come back after that and your first message re-reads everything. If Claude Code offers "Resume from summary" when you come back, take it. Otherwise, start a new chat.
Went down the wrong path? Use /rewind, not /compact
/rewind jumps back to an earlier point in the chat and keeps the cache. /compact rewrites the chat into a summary, so the cache starts over.
See what's eating your limit
Type /usage in Claude Code. It shows where your usage is going and flags cache misses and long chats.
